Lead-safe window replacement in pre-1978 homes
Many Lexington homes, especially older neighborhoods near downtown, were built before 1978 and may have lead paint on window trim and sashes.
What the EPA rule says
Under EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, paid renovations in pre-1978 housing must be done by an EPA Lead-Safe Certified firm using certified renovators and lead-safe work practices. EPA's FAQ notes window replacement is covered even though small paint-disturbance jobs can be exempt as minor repair. Before work starts, the firm must give you EPA's Renovate Right pamphlet.
What to ask installers
- Is your firm EPA Lead-Safe Certified? Can you send the certificate?
- Who on the crew is the certified renovator?
- How will you contain dust and clean up, and is that in the price?
