Replacing windows in a Lexington historic district
If your home is in one of Lexington's 15 local historic districts (H-1 overlay), plan for approval before replacing visible windows.
Certificate of Appropriateness
LFUCG's local historic district permits page says owners must get a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) to change building exteriors. Staff can approve minor changes; substantial changes go to the Board of Architectural Review, which meets twice a month. The page links the district maps, design guidelines and COA application.
Practical tips
- Check the H-1 district map before you collect quotes.
- Ask installers for product specs and photos you can include with a COA application.
- Ask whether repairing original wood windows, or adding storm windows, is an option; it can be cheaper and easier to approve.
- Pre-1978 homes: see lead-safe window replacement.
